Clothing capital of the world

June 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Since Indonesia could arguably be considered the center of the textile/clothing universe, and since Bandung has the largest proliferation of clothing factories of any city in Indonesia, one could say that Bandung is the BEST place in the world to buy clothes.  It is certainly the cheapest.  I have read that there are no less than 50 clothing factories in this city… it feels like there are about 3 or 4 clothing outlets on every block, selling famous brand names at $5-15 dollars.  Some are seconds, overdeliveries, etc.  But usually I can’t find anything wrong with them.   Usually my problem is making a decision with the massive amount of options available to me.

And then there are the indie distros.  These are smallish operations with their own brand & logo, and very edgy clothing.  Usually punk-influenced, and often the styles are cooler than most of the stuff found in U.S. stores (in my opinion).  A lot of the stuff in the U.S. can be really predictable and trendy, whereas the distros here are selling stuff that is breaking the mold and really pushing the envelope.  And it’s really cheap, sometimes cheaper than the factory outlets.

Now I just need to find the time to go shopping.  :)
