Just for fun…
10. It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. Or maybe it’s both, I don’t know. Regardless, it’s going to be HOT.
9. Eight-legged friends. Big hairy spiders, anyone?
8. Slow or non-existent Internet access. Apparently it can be hard to even get dialup at all in some places. Broadband exists, but it’s rare and still considerably slower than US broadband.
7. No hot showers. Oh well, maybe I won’t mind (see #10).
6. Squat toilets with no toilet paper in some places. Guess I won’t be doing anything with my left hand on some days.
5. Traffic and pollution. Smoky chaos in some cities.
4. Standing out like a sore thumb. As a white person, I’ll instantly draw attention and shouts almost everywhere I go. And the usual perceptions of Westerners will apply, including that I’m made of money.
3. Malaria. Man, I really hope I don’t get this.
2. Natural and man-made disasters. Check out this list of recent disasters.
And last but not least… the number one reason NOT to move to Indonesia is…
1. 4 AM wakeup calls from a loudspeaker every morning (Muslim call-to-prayer). Ouch. Not looking forward to that.
Okay, that was all in jest. There are many good reasons FOR moving to Indonesia, and I’ll post those soon. I’m just trying to steel myself for the changes I’ll be experiencing.

if it’s really really hot, you’ll be thankful for those cold showers. i’ve had that experience many times so far.

I’m so proud of both of you. I’m looking forward to seeing you two in December.
Hopefully, my hotel room will be free of spiders like you describe and cockroaches. I do hope I can get food that is not a two star or above for spice/sauce. Love your blog.

Hi Bonnie, we’re looking forward to your visit too! Don’t worry, I think your hotel room will be VERY nice. Not sure about the spicy food, but we can always ask the restaurants to tone it down.
